Traditional Chinese 5 toed Imperial Dragon, guarding the Black Pearl of Immortality. As mythology goes, the 5 toed dragons were considered the most intelligent of the imperial dragons. They were guardians, and considered the bringers of good luck. Also a symbol of Imperial authority, and represent the ‘Yang’ of then Yin Yang ( The Fenghuang (Phoenix) being its opposite ).

My husband has an old shield from his Grey Company days, that has seen better days. What better way to preserve it than use it as reference for artwork.
